Here’s a team that’s always fun to root for – 4-H FIRST Robotics Competition team 1902, Exploding Bacon Robotics, of Orlando, FL! Their robot is the suitably named Ham Solo and they’ll also be competing with their 2nd robot, Chewhogga, driven by their 2nd robot team 5-G Imploding Port.  What’s not to love?

When asked to say what’s special about their team, they’ve got a laundry list of special!

  • We are dedicated to making FIRST loud with three programs we created #FIRSTLikeAGirl, Spark Science Kits, and FIRSTAlliances

  • Our memorable image and vibrant personality is a defining feature of our team.

  • First Florida Team to be inducted into the FRC Hall of Fame.

  • We have public, private and homeschool students. Half of our students are homeschooled, and more than half have participated in FLL or FTC.

  • Our team is a diverse group of 44 students from 14 different schools and 5 different counties.

  • Come visit Wilbur this weekend in the pits & stands!

  • There are more than 85 #FIRSTLikeAGirl videos published.  Some of which were filmed right here at ROBOTICON in 2016 with the help of PLuGHiTz.

  • Two of our students were featured in the 3rd episode of the Galactic Builders series, released this past Thursday.

But wait, there’s more:

With our signature orange and green robots, catchy chants, our interactive mascot Wilbur, and a memorable image, Exploding Bacon isn’t afraid to make FIRST loud. We have successfully created and sustained #FIRSTLikeAGirl, Spark, and FIRSTAlliances — 3 international outreach programs that allow us to spread FIRST and STEM even further.
#FIRSTLikeAGirl is a social media movement that strives to improve the culture of STEM by sharing the stories of inspirational women in FIRST. Spark kits are shoebox sized science kits consisting of an instruction booklet and a variety of simple machine experiments tested by our students. These kits are sent all around the world in an effort to impact children in underprivileged areas. FIRSTAlliances is an online directory of FLL, FTC, and FRC teams ready to help each other. It provides a platform for communication and ways for FIRST teams to share their knowledge and explore other resources provided. This past year we’ve filmed 85+ #FIRSTLikeAGirl videos, acquired over 1 million impressions on Twitter in just one month for #FIRSTLikeAGirl, registered 600+ teams on FIRSTAlliances, and distributed over 140 Spark kits in 43 different countries.

After years of consistent outreach, developing international programs, and maintaining our image, Exploding Bacon was honored with the 2019 World Championship Chairman’s Award and became the first Florida team to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The 29th since 1992.

We believe the ultimate resources in FIRST are the participants who inspire everyday. Our Mission to combine these efforts allows us to magnify our impact into a powerful force for cultural change. Spark provides opportunities for hands-on exploration, #FIRSTLikeAGirl enables us to empower females, & FIRSTAlliances unifies efforts of teams around the world.

Exploding Bacon works tirelessly to make a direct impact that is amplified through our programs, rippling out to leave a legacy of global collaboration, opportunity, & inspiration. Alone we aspire, but alongside FIRSTers everywhere, #TogetherWeInspire.

We are always excited to support FIRST in Florida throughout all levels by volunteering at tournaments and hosting our own workshops. This will be Exploding Bacon’s 5th year at ROBOTICON, and we know it will be a great event! Good luck to all the teams competing!

In a shout out to their sponsors, they have another great list:

  • Thank you to all of our sponsors for supporting us through the past 14 seasons. Without you, we would not be able to afford a build space or robot. Oink Oink Boom!

  • Lockheed Martin, Magnus Hi-Tech, Comcast NBC Universal, BAE Systems, Disney VoluntEARS, Stage Equipment and Lighting, Castle Ventures, Disney Engineering, Leidos, Udowychenko Law Firm, Hall Auto Parts, Elise Cronin-Hurley Web & Graphic Design & Orange County 4-H, Florida

  • Thank you to our dedicated parents like Jessica, Karen, Kelly and Carrie!

  • Thank you to our phenomenal alumni Zach, Dominic & Ryan!

  • Thank you to our amazing college mentors Alexis & Josh!

  • Thank you Wendy Austin, for being an awesome Regional Director and Central Florida team Mom for 15 years.

  • Thank Steve & Terri Willingham for organizing Roboticon so we can all play with robots!

We’re looking forward to ROBOTICON because it will provide special and introductory competition experience for our students. Competitions are one of the most enriching experiences in FRC and our new students look forward to a preview of what they’ll experience after build season. Our students are given opportunities to experience different drive team roles, help other teams, and put the skills they’ve learned to the test!

We’re also looking forward to having fun with our Florida robot friends!
