Our next featured ROBOTICON team is FIRST Robotics Competition team 4118, Roaring Riptide based out of  K-12 school, P.K. Yonge DRS, which is located in Gainesville, Florida.

Our team is unique because of our work in assistive technology (AT). Whether during build season or during the off season, our team develops assistive technology solutions with the goal of making the world more accessible to all people. Last year, our team members put in over 1,400 volunteer hours, of which over 700 were primarily focused in our AT efforts.

Throughout the year, our team participates in a number of community-based, state, and national events that are also focused in AT, such as the ATiA Maker Day in Orlando and the Holiday Toy Adapt-A-Thons. During these events, we present our AT solutions as well as develop solutions to make interactive toys more accessible, specifically for children with limited motor control. A few of our team’s partnerships in AT include non-profits such as ATMakers, Makers Making Change, and Magic Wheelchair. One of our team’s main goals is to spread both STEM and FIRST awareness through our #FIRSTwithAT campaign that seeks to get more FIRST teams involved in this incredible form of outreach.

We’d like to give a shout out to our Team’s Coach, Ms. Brewster, for helping keep our team “afloat”. Special Thanks to our sponsors P.K. Yonge, UF Innovate, Best Buy, Pratt & Whitney, Coldwell Banker Realty, Gator Engineering, Jeffcoat Signs, and Orlando Maker Faire.

We are looking forward to meeting new teams and making new friends, while attending Roboticon.
