ROBOTICON Partner Spotlight: Meet Green Mouse Academy!

Green Mouse Academy has supported FIRST programs in Palm Beach County since 2005 and more recently became the FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League Jr. Program Partner for South Florida. In addition to providing leadership and direct support to regional teams, Green Mouse Academy is a brand new ROBOTICON partner and is pleased to be showcasing its newest Design Technology student enrichment program.

Shane Vander Kooi, President and Founder of Green Mouse Academy, who is also the FIRST LEGO League partner in South Florida, tells us a little more about Green Mouse Academy here.

SVK: At Green Mouse Academy we help students ‘Connect the Dots’ through project-based-learning activities that we call Technology Arts. We work with students of all ages and our workshop programs are available through schools, camps, after school programs and other organizational partners.

Since launching in 2004, demand has continually increased and this year the GMA team will directly deliver STEM and Maker enrichment workshops to more than 3,000 individual students in South Florida while supporting over 1500 after school educators and teachers nationwide, indirectly serving over 20,000 students. Our programs are provided through various partnerships and through funding provided by Prime Time Palm Beach County, the Children’s Services Council, the Palm Beach School District, and the Palm Beach County Youth Services Dept.

ROBOTICON: Why is your organization supporting ROBOTICON?

Team “Paragons” are test driving GMA’s newest program at the South Florida FIRST LEGO League Regional Championship at Boynton Beach High School in February.

SVK: My personal vision is to help develop a student-led robotics and innovation program that will lead to the creation of perpetual pipeline of creative STEM talent within our region. FIRST programs can help bring that vision to life. It will also require bringing together multiple public and private stakeholders all engaging together to build a community STEM ecosystem. That system is already well developed and being showcased through ROBOTICON. This event is not only fun, but for me it also represents a successful and inspiring community that I’m honored to be a part of and look forward to learning from.
